Dental Hygienist Treatments
Your gums surround the teeth in the jaws and help to support them. Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth.
Red and swollen gums that bleed when you brush them, could be a sign of gum disease. If left untreated it can develop further, causing damage to the supporting bone and can lead to tooth loss, requiring procedures to replace the missing tooth.
- Minimised risk of tooth loss
- Reduced risk of developing tooth decay and needing fillings
- Fresh breath
Fortunately, this can be avoided by having regular hygiene check-ups and a good daily hygiene routine to ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy. If you have a dental bridge, braces or a dental implant you will have specific hygiene needs that the hygienist will be able to assist you with.
Patients can choose from a ‘scale & polish’ OR ‘Air Polish’ – advanced cleaning’ for plaque/tartar/stain removal treatment. The Air Polish is designed to safely and gently remove all stains off the teeth bringing the shine back to your smile.
The treatment of gum disease requires very detailed measurements of the gum attachment to the tooth. The hygienist can then plan for cleaning of the tooth roots known as ‘root surface debridement’. Regular visits to the hygienist are recommended for anyone prone to gum disease.

FAQs
At The Dentist, we ensure all of your dental needs can be taken care of. While our team of dentists can take care of any repairs or restoration work, our dental hygienists can be your first line of defence in maintaining optimal oral health. The job of a dental hygienist is to clean and polish teeth. They will also remove unsightly tartar and plaque. Perhaps most importantly, a dental hygienist checks your teeth while they are being cleaned so that any underlying issues can be detected early.
You may have a great dental hygiene regimen in place, but even the most diligent people will benefit from regular visits to their dental hygienist. Visit your dental hygienist every six months for a thorough cleaning of your teeth and have your hygienist give you a complete oral hygiene check-up. These preventative measures will keep your dental health in check and avoid complicated and expensive treatments in the future.
You can look after your own teeth, and you should be doing that anyway. A daily oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing are a must and it won’t hurt to give your mouth a good rinse with a mouthwash. However, even if you do maintain such a meticulous routine, you may not be removing plaque or tartar. Plaque and tartar are the major causes of gum disease and tooth decay. Both these problems can escalate into more serious problems and you could end up losing your teeth. By all means, take care of your dental health, but boost your efforts with a visit to your dental hygienist at least twice a year.
On average, a visit to the dental hygienist will take about 30 minutes. However, a visit can easily take up to 45 minutes or longer. It will depend on what needs to be done. This is another reason to schedule regular visits with your dental hygienist. The longer you leave between visits, the longer you may need to spend in the hygienist’s chair.
In most cases, a dental hygiene treatment is relatively painless. The techniques used to clean your teeth, such as a scale and polish or Air Polish, are gentle on your teeth and gums, yet the process is very effective at getting your teeth clean. If you do feel any pain or discomfort, let your dental hygienist know. You may get a local anaesthetic injection or gel applied to ease the pain.
Getting your teeth professionally cleaned and polished will prevent harmful tartar and plaque from building up on the surface of your teeth. This will, in turn, prevent decay and cavities from forming so you can prevent excessive deterioration that leads to extensive and extensive dental work being needed. A thorough cleaning also ensures you have fresher breath which is always desirable.
