FAQs
If your dentures are loose or ill-fitting, your ability to function on a daily basis may be adversely affected. Your ability to eat certain foods is affected and you may have trouble speaking clearly. If this is your everyday reality, your dentist will suggest a denture stabilisation to secure your dentures into place and let you focus on better things than how your dentures are sitting on your gums.
The procedure for denture stabilisation is similar to having dental implants fitted. You will require oral surgery to place dental implants into your jaw. Once your jaw heals, you can dentures can be fitted on top of the implants with special fixtures.
Once you’ve had a denture stabilisation procedure, you will still need to remove your dentures every night. You should also maintain a good oral hygiene regimen to ensure your dentures and gums are clean and well maintained.
With the proper oral hygiene regimen and regular visits to The Dentist for care and maintenance, you can expect your denture stabilisation to last indefinitely. This is a permanent solution for those who need dentures, but don’t like the idea of fiddling with removable ones, or dealing with ill-fitting loose dentures.
During the denture stabilisation procedure, you will receive a local anaesthetic and sedation if you feel apprehensive about this process. During the actual procedure you shouldn’t feel anything more than mild discomfort. You may experience some pain after the implants have been fitted, but this can be managed with over the counter pain medication. There will also be an adjustment period once the dentures are fixed to the implants but once this passes, you’ll barely notice you’ve had any work done.
The main benefit of denture stabilisation is that you have a permanent solution to multiple tooth loss. Your gums and bones will maintain their shape so you won’t get that hollowed out look that is so prevalent with traditional denture use. You are also less likely to experience the usual irritation and discomfort from having traditional dentures rubbing on your gums for several hours every day. Best of all, you can eat, drink, speak and laugh with complete confidence knowing your dentures are securely in place.
