About white fillings
White fillings are made from dental composite and resins, which match the shade of your tooth; there are lots of different shades of composite available and your dentist will select the closest match to your tooth. White fillings not only blend in with the natural tooth shade for ultimate discretion, they also provide a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to mercury amalgam fillings.
Why would I need a filling?
Fillings are generally used to treat decayed teeth when a cavity has formed; filling the tooth makes it stronger and helps to protect it from injury and damage. The procedure to fill a tooth also helps to reduce the spread of bacteria through the tooth, which reduces the risk of severe infection.
What happens when you have a filling?
Having a filling is nothing to worry about; the procedure is usually complete within an hour and it is carried out under local anaesthetic so that you don’t feel any pain. Before the composite is placed inside the tooth, the cavity is cleaned completely and any traces of decayed tissue are removed. Bonding material is then placed inside the cavity and the composite is moulded to fit the hole; it is then set using a curing light and then trimmed to make sure of a perfect fit. After you have a filling, your tooth will feel a little numb for a short period of time and it’s best to avoid hard and chewy foods and hot drinks until the numbness subsides.
