Root Canal Treatments in Leeds

Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is required when the nerve tissue inside your tooth dies off. This is most often due to tooth decay or damage from trauma or by extensive dental procedures.

Infection can occur and may spread through the root canal, leading to an abscess and causing discomfort. If root canal treatment is not carried out, a tooth may need to be taken out. We are proud to offer our patients advanced root canal techniques under high-powered magnification by our specialist in this field.

  • Preservation of remaining healthy tooth structure
  • Prevention of infection spreading any further
  • Restoration of tooth which feels and looks like a natural tooth

A root canal is possibly the most dreaded of all dental procedures, but at TheDentist, it doesn’t need to be. It involves some very intricate work on your tooth, but our dentists ensure our patients are comfortable during the entire process. During a root canal, your tooth is cleared of decay, and the dentist will drill further into your tooth to remove the nerve and pulp.

You may think removing the nerve is bad for your tooth, but the nerve actually isn’t necessary to ensure the health of your tooth. Once the nerve and pulp have been removed, the natural cavity is cleaned, and it can be filled with a special filling.

What to expect at your initial consultation?

Your Root Canal Treatment Journey…

  1. Fill out the contact form to start your journey
  2. A member of our award winning team will be in touch, we will be able to discuss your issue, and how to move forward
  3. A small hole is made in the tooth to carefully get to the root canal system
  4. The root canal system will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any infected tissue. If substantial infection is present, this cleaning procedure may occur over 1 or 2 visits
  5. The root canal space is then shaped and filled and the tooth is restored back again, often requiring a dental crown

FAQs

The main cause of nerve and pulp problems in a tooth is decay. Tooth decay can result in the nerve and pulp becoming infected and inflamed. Decay isn’t the only problem that may have your dentist considering a root canal treatment. A root canal may also be necessary if your tooth has been damaged, chipped or broken. In some cases, sustaining a heavy blow to your jawline can also result in nerve and pulp damage in your tooth.

A severely painful toothache is usually a good indication that you may need a root canal. However, there are usually other signs as well. Your tooth may have become overly sensitive to hot and cold and remain sensitive long after the source of the heat or cold problem has been removed. You may also have noticed that chewing on that tooth is quite painful. Some visible symptoms include the affected tooth becoming discoloured or the area around the tooth is inflamed and may have tiny pimples appearing. Not all teeth requiring a root canal show symptoms and, at times, the first sign of such a tooth is uncovered during a routine visit to your dentist.

You will need at least two visits to the dentist for a root canal treatment. The first involves cleaning the inside of the tooth and removing the nerve and pulp. The second, or subsequent visits involve treating an infected cavity. Once the cavity is infection free, your dentist will place a filling in the hole and the root canal treatment is complete.

Most people shudder at the very thought of having a root canal treatment as they have been elevated to the notoriety of being extremely painful. Once upon a time, that may have been the case, but with continuous advancements in anaesthetics, you will most likely only feel mild pressure that is very similar to being treated with a regular filling.

You may experience some mild pain for a few days following a root canal treatment, but this is usually due to the natural cavity being slightly inflamed. In serious cases, where the pulp was infected, your dentist may recommend taking antibiotics to prevent further infection or inflammation. If you do experience mild pain, it can usually be managed with an over-the-counter medication.

I didn't realise what a good dentist was until I had my new patient consultation last week. Using exceptionally detailed X-Rays, I was able to see that my previous dentist had not seen the problems I had with an old root canal, and with the one they did themselves.

Fortunately The Dentist spotted these, got me in for a hygiene deep clean (not what you'd call enjoyable, but made as comfortable as possible) and a review is in the diary too. In just two visits, I feel like I've had the best dental treatment in twenty years. And for no more money than two visits to my previous dentists.

Really excellent service, very pleasant surroundings and attentive staff who explain, smile and comfort. What more could you want?

The reception staff are brilliant! Always really efficient and helpful with anything I’ve needed! 10/10!!

I recently had another visit with Yahya Patel and could not be more pleased with his work and approachable manner. By far the best dentist I have seen and would highly recommend him to anyone.

The service I received from Lauren, the practice manager, was also amazing!

Having wanted to get my teeth looking good for years, I put my faith in James at The Dentist. From initially doing a mock up to then having over 3 hours in the chair - OMG he gave me the mirror and I was blown away! Amazing, what a slick operator, his attention to detail, like an artist ! And they are amazing . Subtle, balanced, not looking like a bright Turkey job, just right . Having experienced other dentists in the past, I have never known such an efficient and slick organisation as The Dentist. I would highly recommend James to anyone wanting to look 20 years younger !

Last year, I had what I thought would be a small aesthetic change done to my teeth by my previous dentist who unfortunately actually made changes that weren't discussed or asked for. After trying to work those issues out with him, I was unfortunately not given any solutions to fix what occurred and was left devastated.

I found The Dentist after searching online for quite some time for a dentist I felt I could trust to fix the issues I was left with. That was very hard for me because I've had terrible experiences in the past (like that one) and felt like I wouldn't be able to find one I could trust. I loved the results on their website and decided to take a chance and booked a consultation with Dr. James Taylor.

At the consultation James was able to quickly give me options to fix what was done. It was such a relief considering my previous dentist gave me no options, so I didn't think anything could be done. During this year, James fixed all of the issues I had and now my teeth look even better than they did before which I never thought could be possible. I was absolutely thrilled with the results and I'm so happy I took the chance to come and see him with my issues.

    Thank you again for everything!

Absolutely fantastic dental surgery, from the brilliant team on reception to the hygienists and dentists, everyone is so professional and friendly. As someone who is nervous of the dentists due to previous bad experiences I have never felt as ease as much as I don’t with all the team. I cannot praise and recommend this dental surgery enough, they have been AMAZING in my extensive treatment, coming to the dentists is now a pleasure and not a dreaded experience twice a year.

James Taylor has been my dentist for many years and now he has a new practice in Leeds. Lovely practice with lovely, well presented premises and friendly staff. I always look forward to my visit here and can’t recommend it enough. James has always been extra special and I would call him a friend as well as my dentist. He has been and still is a dentist to all my family too. Never feel rushed and he always makes time for a chat to ask how I am. I am always happy with my treatments too.
    A pleasure as always 👍🏼😊

I brought my son (who has additional needs) to see James for a consultation on teeth straightening, and also to have non invasive x-rays taken (these are not on offer at our usual dentist). James explained everything he was doing, and put my son at ease. It is really hard to find a dentist accessible for children with additional needs, but my son found the whole appointment stress free. James has offered several options for teeth straightening, taking into account the things my son struggles with such as diet, and taking pain relief. I feel really confident that whichever option my son chooses, James will tailor the treatment to meet his needs, and take a holistic approach as to what will work best for his particular situation.

Fantastic dentist. Actually enjoy going here! Very clean, modern and comfortable. Staff are professional, welcoming and friendly. My teeth gradually became worse over time, moving considerably due to issues with my wisdom teeth being impacted, and then removed while I was living abroad. Yayah is a brilliant dentist. An absolute pleasure. Nothing too much trouble. Takes tremendous pride in his work. I still can’t believe what he did with my teeth. They look amazing. Still getting used to being able to smile again!
